Despite white-washing rumors, "Ghost in the Shell" is here and gracing movie screens in March 31, 2017. Scarlett Johansson, lead actor playing The Major, is still proud of the movie.
In the newly released trailer, Johansson made a short intro saying that she was thrilled to play the legendary role. She also explained that they have been working hard to create a movie that's on par with the beloved animated series.
"Ghost in the Shell" is an anime that has been in existence for over 25 years but the animated series just celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. The cyberpunk anime series is one of the best animated films in Japan, Den of Geek reported.
The famous animated explores the meaning of humanity, it focuses on what will happen if a person's consciousness is copied into another body. It is also a world where a hacker can plant a false memory on a person, confusing a person on what is real and what is not.
Just recently, Scarlett Johansson was in Japan with famous Japanese actor Takeshi Kitano and the film's director Rupert Sanders to promote the show. Collider believes that Johansson will nail the role and the finished film will be really cool.
Johansson's casting as The Major raised an eyebrow among fans, mainly because the film main character is supposed to be a Japanese woman named Maj. Matoko Kasunagi. Fans even petitioned for the lead character to be changed but despite the petition Johansson still remained to play the role.
Jobs and Hire reported that fans were disappointed that the movie executive did not choose an Asian actor to play the legendary major. The executives were accused with white-washing the lead character of the movie.
The news site reported that ethnic discrimination has been plaguing the "Ghost in the Shell" movie since its first announcement last year. This compels the executives to appease the fans of the show by providing fans great movie content.
