Human Immunodeficiency Virus is a virus that attacks the body's defenses and the immune system. When the body's immune system is weak the body will not have the capacity to fight off the disease.Additionally, as supported by WebMD, the chronic stage of HIV is called AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).
People with AIDS can easily get infections or cancers because they are already immunocompromised. Currently, the treatment of HIV is often called antiretroviral therapy which consists of a combination of different drugs. These drugs will help the patient to fight other infections but it does not necessarily cure the infection.
A report from the BBC news health section reveals that there is a drug that reduces the risk of being infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus commonly known as HIV. However, the said drug will first undergo clinical trial under the supervision of the National Health System (NHS) in England.
Furthermore, the process of the clinical trial was also revealed. The drug will be administered to more than 10,000 people in a regimen of three-year-long clinical trial. The NHS revealed that the three-year-long clinical trial will enable them to understand the therapeutic effect of the drug and how are they going to offer the drug into a wide variety of patients. The drug is considered as a prophylactic dose because it disables the virus before it will infect the patient at risk. It costs 400 Euros for every patient and it can lower the risk of being infected by up to 86%.
National Health System of England has a standing belief that there is strong evidence that the drug is effective. However, questions and theories about the whole treatment profile of the drug need further understanding and investigations.
With the increasing case of HIV worldwide, it is good to know that there are some healthcare institutions that are willing to discover the treatment of this life-threatening viral infection. Hopefully, the clinical trial would be successful for it will be a great help in reducing the mortality and morbidity rate caused by HIV.
