The “Doctor Who” Christmas Special is airing in a few days, and fans are getting a special treat as Peter Capaldi returns as the Time Lord in the special episode. Apart from teaming up with a superhero, Capaldi said that the special will be very familiar with fans as the Doctor will take on monsters in “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.”
In an interview on “The Andrew Marr Show” via Screenrant, Capaldi talked about what fans can expect from “Doctor Who” season 10 and from the upcoming Christmas episode.
“I think a lot of the time a lot of people watch it who don’t normally watch ‘Doctor Who,’ so it becomes rather like a tradition,” said the British actor. Capaldi added that the ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special is a nostalgic reminder to a lot of people as it reminds them of their childhood.
“There’s still monsters,” said Capaldi. “And there’s still a mysterious man who operates the TARDIS. So it’s a tradition that is quite a responsibility, really, to deliver now.”
According to Stuff, the “Doctor Who” Christmas Special will see the Time Lord teaming up with an investigative journalist named Lucy (Charity Wakefield) and a superhero who will be played by Justin Chatwin. There are rumors that the “Shameless” actor will play a character called The Ghost, and that he and the Doctor will save New York City from an alien invasion.
Meanwhile, some media outlets have been invited to watch an advance screening of the “Doctor Who” Christmas Special, and Digital Spy reports that fans can expect to laugh out loud as there is a whole range of new gags in the episode. Despite speculations that “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” is a superhero parody, the website says that it is untrue—rather, the episode is more of a tribute to comic book superheroes.
The “Doctor Who” Christmas Special airs Sunday, Dec. 25 at 9 p.m. on BBC America.
