The dollar store can be a haven for those who are looking to save money, but it can also be filled with inexpensive junk that break after one use. However, there are some items that you should always buy at the dollar store, as these products always cost more at the big stores.
When shopping at dollar stores, always check the quality of what you’re getting, and opt for name brand items if they have them. If you’re getting food or drinks, make sure that the expiration date hasn’t passed.
Here are the things that you should always buy at the dollar store.
Hair ties
If you have long hair, or if you have daughters, chances are you go through hair ties pretty quickly. It just make sense to get a pack of these at the dollar store, as a pack of elastic hair ties can cost about $3 or more when you buy them at the mall.
Flower pots
Clay or plastic pots are a steal for a dollar at Dollar Tree, The Dollar Store, or The Dollar General as these often cost about $5 at hardware stores. Get a few for your garden, or use these pots to stow crafting materials.
Pens and pencils
A 12-count set of number 2 pencils, a set of gel pens, and even mechanical colored pencils can all be had for a dollar each at Dollar Tree. You can even get a colorful pencil case to keep your stash in.
Organizational bins, trays, and containers
Parents who homeschool their kids will find these much-needed and very useful items to be a steal.
Craft items
The dollar store is a crafter’s dream as beads, stickers, card stock, pipe cleaners, and glitter can all be found here.
Pet dishes
Pet dishes from the pet store can be quite costly, so make sure to get a new water or food dish for your beloved pet from the dollar store. Some branches even have leashes, treats, and dog shampoo, so check the aisles to see what’s available.
Activity books
Most dollar stores carry coloring books for children and adults, as well as crossword puzzles, word finders, and Sudoku—perfect for stashing in one’s bag for trips to the doctor or wherever one needs to spend a few hours waiting.
Makeup
Dollar Tree has Wet n’ Wild, L.A. Colors, and Colormates cosmetics—all for a dollar each. Dollar General carries Maybelline and Cover Girl items, while Dollar Store has cosmetics from Santee and Beauty Treats, with some even retailing for less than a dollar. Just make sure that each item is still sealed before you go to the cashier.
