A 56-year-old Gerald Don Miller of Winnsboro was charged with two counts of impersonating a public servantfollowing an investigation of allegedly misrepresenting himself as a Child Protective Services worker to sexually assault children, KSST Radio reported.
The Lamar County's investigation started in early June when a guardian of a child reported to the Sheriff's Office on June 18, detailing a man who allegedly claimed to be a CPS worker and gained access to her child after persuading them he needed to speak with her, the Lamar County Sheriff's Office investigation reads.
Deputies Connecting a Similar Incident Involving the Fake CPS Worker
The evidence found in the Lamar County investigation resembled a similar incident that occurred in Sulphur Springs in November 2023, the sheriff's office stated. This led to the identification of Gerald Don Miller of Franklin County as the individual impersonating a CPS worker on June 25.
The Sulphur Springs authorities' description of the suspect and vehicle matched the information gathered in Lamar County, leading to the search warrant execution at Miller's residence in Winnsboro, Franklin County, where detectives recovered property from Miller's vehicle that matched the description provided by the Lamar County's victim, as well as evidence linking him to the Sulphur Springs offense.
The Filing of Multiple Charges Against The Fake CPS Worker
Miller had been apprehended and taken into Franklin County Jail custody, facing multiple charges across various jurisdictions, according to investigators.
Miller faced charges of public servant impersonation in the Lamar County Sheriff's Office, with a bond amounting to $25,000 from Franklin County Jail. At the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office, Miller was charged with sexual assault, with a $100,000 bond, along with another charge of public servant impersonation, with a $100,000 bond from Hopkins County Jail. Miller was also charged with another public servant impersonation at the Sulphur Springs Police Department, with a $100,000 bond set at Hopkins County Jail.
Collective Investigative Efforts Leading to A Criminal's Arrest
Law enforcement and Child Protective Services want to remind communities that CPS workers will always carry accredited credentials and show proof before discussing with individuals.
Law enforcement agencies request that anyone who has had contact with this individual while he claimed to be with CPS come forward by contacting their local law enforcement agency.
Miller is described as 5'08" tall and weighing approximately 240 pounds. He has brown and white hair and a white mustache. He may have been carrying a red case displaying a Texas Department of Criminal Justice logo.
Sheriff Cass highlighted that this investigation exemplifies how collaboration between agencies can successfully resolve a case and commended the collective efforts of the Lamar County Sheriff's Office detectives, the Sulphur Springs Police Department, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office, and Child Protective Services. Sheriff Cass emphasized that another criminal has been removed from the streets and neighborhoods through such collective efforts. The investigation remains ongoing.
