The very first trailer for the upcoming 2014 Disney film "Maleficent" has been released, with Angelina Jolie as Maleficent.
Fans of Jolie and Disney alike will be excited as the watch "Maleficent" trailer online, which was released to the internet yesterday.
The stunning Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted; Mr. and Mrs. Smith) stars as the eponymous Maleficent, an evil fairy and the villain to "Sleeping Beauty," and has stricken fear into the hearts of youngsters since the animated "Sleeping Beauty" film in 1959.
"Maleficent" attempts to bring a new spin to the classic, 17th century tale of "Sleeping Beauty," popularised in the 19th century by the Grimm brothers, and heavily toned down by Walt Disney in 1959, where Maleficent was voiced by Eleanor Audley.
And in 2014, Maleficent gets to explain her side of the story; in the 1959 animated film, Maleficent gets all vengeful and curses Aurora...just because she wasn't invited to the party.
Spoiler abound:
The Official synopsis for "Maleficent" goes thus: ''A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal - an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realises that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom - and perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well."
If you watch the "Maleficent" trailer online, TInkerbell-like fairies could be seen zipping around Aurora's (played by Elle Channing) head, something veery characteristc of Disney. However, Angelina Jolie as Maeficent seems to cast the film in a darker light.
However, Angelina Jolie said that Maleficent was her favorite DIsney villain as a child, ''Maleficent was always my favourite - no surprise ... she had this elegance and grace, yet she was so cruel, just wonderfully, deliciously cruel.''
