Shoppers were in for quite a surprise when shoplifters wreaked havoc on Black Friday. At the parking lot of a Kohl's store in Chicago, shots were fired and a police officer was dragged across some distance while stuck to the getaway car. The Kohl's shooting resulted in multiple injuries though none were reported to be life threatening.
At 10 pm Thursday night, the police engaged suspected shoplifters when one rushed to his car and closed the door on an approaching police officer. He was dragged across the parking lot resulting in a shoulder injury that landed the policeman in the hospital. Another officer repeated shouted for the assailant to stop the vehicle, only pacifying him with a shot to the suspect's left arm. The 52-year-old driver was taken to the hospital to tend to his wounds. The Kohl's shooting ended with no casualties and all suspects apprehended.
The incident in Romeoville, Chicago was a unique occurrence according to the residents of the usually quiet suburb. Suspects of the Kohl's shooting were later identified as Robert Russell, 51, and 28-year-old Gerald Chamberlain. The former was a passenger inside the vehicle involved while the latter was caught inside the store. The driver has yet to be charged pending his release from the hospital. Russell was charged with attempted murder while Chamberlain was charged with felony theft.
Despite the Kohl's shooting, the store will still be open for Friday with a taped off fire lane outside and a handful of police vehicles. Many other stores reported violence as the notorious yearly holiday sale day opened. Rowdy crowds and violent behavior were reported nationwide as the national shopping spree continued. An expected 140 million Americans will be in stores or online to grab the best deals on electronics, toys and other holiday gift items.
