Caroline Wozniacki: Tennis Meets Golf In McIlroy-Wozniacki Engagement

Tennis champ Caroline Wozniacki and golf star Rory McIlroy shared the good news of their engagement to the world through Twitter on Wednesday.

Former world number one in men's golf McIlroy shared photos of himself and Caroline Wozniacki who sported a diamond ring on her left ring finger.

The 24-year-old Northern Ireland native uploaded the photo with an ecstatic Tweet, saying "Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!"

Former women's tennis number one Caroline Wozniacki also did some announcing of her own in her Twitter account, posting the same pictures and captioning them with "Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! ... I said YES!!!!"

23-year-old Wozniacki was forced to withdraw from a WTA match in Brisbane the previous weekend because of a shoulder injury but the tennis star was set to participate in a tuneup event in Sydney for the Australian Open.

McIlroy nabbed his first major golf title after participating in the 2011 US Open, followed by another win at the 2012 PGA Championship.
Caroline Wozniacki is still working for her first Grand Slam title, her most noteable achievement in a major event having been the US Open final in 2009.

The two star athlete's relationship have had its ups and downs this year with rumors of their engagement first popping up one year before, followed by speculation of a breakup in 2013.

No further details regarding the wedding were disclosed by either athlete.

McIlroy was not able to grab any major titles for this year's US PGA season, with his best efforts only managing a runner-up standing at the Texas Open in April 2013 just ahead of the Masters. The athlete's best major gain was an eighth rank in the PGA Championship.

His disappointing results sparked criticisms, some people even questioning the golf star's decision to change the brand of his equipment in 2013. A few doubted his passion for the sport.

"Did I need the win? Probably not," former world number one McIlroy said. "Was it nice to get the win? Of course. But I felt like I saw enough good golf in there to know that it was very close, and it wasn't going to be long before I did win.

"What I was happy with the most was the limited amount of times that I have gotten in contention this year, I have played well. I have played well down the stretch. I've played well under pressure."
