Floyd Mayweather Jr. Next Fight: Marcos Maidana Wants Shot At “Money”, Robert Garcia Says Argentine Can Beat Pound-for-Pound King

Marcos Maidana looks headed to a rematch with Adrien Broner later this year, but his camp is still hoping that the Argentine champion will get a shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his next fight on May 3 in Las Vegas.

Maidana shocked the world when he dominated the previously-unbeaten American in their 12-round showdown, running away with a unanimous decision victory to grab the WBA welterweight title from Broner.

Recent reports suggested that Broner exercised his rematch option, but Maidana's manager, Sebastian Cortusi, expressed disappointment, saying that they believe Maidana should be given a chance to face Mayweather after their impressive win over Broner.

"We've thought Maidana's impressive win was gonna earn him a unification fight against Mayweather in May. But one thing is Mayweather, and a totally different thing is Broner, needless to say. Mayweather is the best and he obviously calls the shots, but Broner is coming off a beating at the hands of Maidana," Cortusi stressed in an ESPN interview.

Mayweather has yet to name his opponent for his next fight on May 3rd, but it is widely-believed that the reigning pound-for-pound king is leaning towards facing Amir Khan.

Khan previously stated that he has already signed a contract to face Mayweather, but the Grand Rapids native has yet to affix his signature on the contract of their showdown, which is expected to earn at least $200 million.

Trainer Robert Garcia echoed the same statement of Cortusi, expressing disappointment that Maidana is being set aside for Mayweather's next fight, saying that he feels his fighter has a better chance of handing Mayweather his first defeat than Khan.

"We thought by beating Broner and doing it the way we did, we definitely earned the shot at Mayweather. For whatever reason it looks like they're going to go with Amir Khan and we're going to have to wait and wait, because what if he changes his mind and fights someone else?" Garcia lamented.

If the Mayweather vs. Khan fight gets finalized in the coming weeks, Maidana and his camp will have to settle with the rematch against Broner. It was originally scheduled on April 19 or 26, but Maidana has already turned down the proposed date due to personal reasons and lack of time to rest and prepare for his title defense.
