Pau Gasol is expected to become one of the most coveted free agents this summer, and reports indicated that several teams are already showing interest in acquiring the Los Angeles Lakers center in the offseason.
Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix reported that most executives are convinced that the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Bobcats, and the Memphis Grizzlies are expected to make a run at Gasol.
The Bulls and Cavaliers are expected to make a strong push to sign superstars this offseason, and Gasol could be on their Plan B if they fail to sign their top targets.
The Bobcats, on the other hand, might pursue the 33-year-old center to form a deadly frontline combination with Al Jefferson, while the Grizzlies could reunite with Gasol if Zach Randolph decides to sign elsewhere.
Gasol is having an impressive season, but has had run-ins with Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni. The 13-year-veteran is is averaging 17.4 points and 9.7 rebounds this season. While his numbers are impressive, several executives believe that a change of scenery will work wonders for the Spanish center.
"Some people say he is worn out, that he is too far past his prime to really help a contender. There are others that think that LA, that environment the past two season, that style of play has destroyed him and if he goes somewhere else, plays with a different coach, he might be rejuvenated," one Eastern Conference executive was quoted as saying.
Gasol, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, said that he will consider all options this summer, including staying with the Lakers.
The Lakers have the ability to offer the biggest contract to Gasol, but the four-time All-Star reiterated that money will not be his priority, saying that he is looking to play for a team with a good chance of winning a championship in the next several seasons.
"I want to be in a team that is going to be built to win a championship," Gasol said. "That's my top priority. Money won't be the main priority. Length and money are factors, but we'll see. Until I know all the options, I won't be able to measure them. But we're getting close to the end of my career. I want to be in a good situation."
