Knicks News and Rumors: Steve Kerr Could Be Named As New Knicks Coach This Week, Golden State Warriors Also Interested?

The New York Knicks could have their new bench tactician as reports indicated that team president Phil Jackson could introduce Steve Kerr as the new coach anytime this week.

Marc Berman of NY Post reported on Monday that the coaching search could end this week with sources saying that Kerr is just waiting for a go signal from TNT, his current employer.

Berman reported that Kerr will be a part of TNT's broadcast panel in game one of the second-round series between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, which could be Kerr's final appearance in a TNT telecast.

Sources indicated that the Knicks will intensify contract talks in the coming days especially after Kerr got the permission from his wife, Margot, to accept the job once it is offered to him.

"Steve Kerr is scheduled to broadcast Game 1 of the second-round NBA playoff series between the Thunder and the Clippers in Oklahoma City on Monday night with longtime TNT partner Marv Albert. That could be Kerr's last telecast, with a league source saying matters with the Knicks should progress this week," Berman noted.

The Knicks are reportedly worried that other teams might enter the picture, which is the reason why they will try to finalize a deal with Kerr this week.

Kerr previously said that he will also listen to other interested teams aside from the Knicks. The Golden State Warriors, who was recently eliminated by the Clippers, could search for a new coach this summer.

Sources said that Kerr is also intrigued about the possibility of coaching the young Warriors squad, but he is not willing to wait for the Warriors to announce their offseason plans.

Kerr, who previously worked as the general manager of the Phoenix Suns, has no previous coaching experience, and sources close to the situation said that Kerr believes that learning from Phil Jackson will give him the best chance of succeeding as a rookie coach.

"Sources have indicated Kerr may have interest in listening to the Warriors, but isn't willing to wait, and that Kerr believes his best chance of success as a rookie head coach is learning under Phil Jackson," NY Post noted.
