Amir Khan was on the verge of landing a bout against Floyd Mayweather before the unbeaten champion opted to face Marcos Maidana in May in Las Vegas.
But despite failing in his bid to face Mayweather, Khan expressed confidence that his dream bout against the reigning pound-for-pound king will eventually happen.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Khan said that he could finally land the bout, not in September this year, but in May next year, saying that he cannot return to the ring in September because of religious reasons.
"The fight between me and Floyd Mayweather is going to happen one day," Khan said. "As long as I keep winning and putting on great performances, it is definitely going to happen. But I cannot do September because of Ramadan. The next time that it could happen is in May. I can fight then so it could be Floyd's next fight after September."
Mayweather is scheduled to return to the ring in September, and is considering facing Danny Garcia and Marcos Maidana, who could get a rematch after giving Mayweather arguably the toughest fight of his career.
Khan is coming off an impressive performance against Luis Collazo, scoring a lopsided unanimous decision win with two judges scoring the bout 119-104, while the other one had it 117-106.
The former light welterweight world champion knocked Collazo down in the fourth round, followed by two more in the tenth round en route to the impressive win.
Aside from Mayweather, the Bolton, England native is also setting his sights on other big fights, including a showdown against Mexican boxing icon Juan Manuel Marquez and his former stablemate and sparring partner, Manny Pacquiao.
"I am looking at the likes of Marquez and Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather - they are the big names and that is where I belong fighting the top guys," Khan said. "There are talks about Manny Pacquiao happening in the future - may be next. So I have left my team, Al Hayman and my team Khan Promotions to do everything."
As for his next fight, Khan said that he is planning to return to the ring in November and December, but he has not list of possible opponents at this point.
