Israel has awarded legendary actor Michael Douglas $1 million for the Genesis Prize Award. Popularly known as the "Jewish Nobel Prize," Douglas has given the recognition for his efforts in promoting the Jewish culture.

The $1 million prize awarded by the Israeli government to actor Michael Douglas is usually given to an individual with exceptional commitment to Jewish values, the Jewish community and the state of Israel. According to Yahoo! News, the prize was established in 2014 as a partnership between the prime minister's office of Israel, the Genesis Philanthropy Group and the chairman's office of the Jewish Agency, a nonprofit group with close ties to the Israeli government.

"[Michael Douglas] was being honored both for his professional achievements and for his passion for his Jewish heritage and the Jewish state," Genesis chairman Stan Polovets stated on Wednesday.

"The Douglas family's experience of connecting with its heritage and embracing it on their own terms embodies an inclusive approach for Jews of diverse backgrounds," Polovets added. "This is particularly important today, when the question of what it means to be Jewish has become more pressing than ever."

Michael Douglas, 70, has embraced his Jewish ancestry and has supported several causes because of his father, Kirk, who is a Jew. The critically-acclaimed actor also shared his plans in using the $1 million prize awarded by Israel to support activities intended to raise awareness of inclusiveness and diversity on Judaism.

Aside from being a multi-awarded actor and a Genesis Prize 2015 laureate, Michael Douglas is also a United Nations Messenger of Peace. His goals are centered on human rights, prevention of gun violence and anti-proliferation work of nuclear power.

Meanwhile, as Israel awarded $1 million prize to actor Michael Douglas, he also expressed his gratitude in receiving the recognition.

"I share this award with my family, who encouraged me in my exploration of the Jewish faith," Douglas said as quoted by HAARETZ. "I hope these teachings and values will be part of the legacy in the world that I leave for my children and those who follow."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will award the $1 million prize to award-winning actor Michael Douglas, who is dubbed as an "actor-producer and peace activist," during a ceremony in Jerusalem on June 18. The Jewish Journal also revealed that Human Rights activist and Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky will also be present at the awarding this summer.
