Tips on How to Asses Your Next Career Move

At some point in our career,we need to make that move to expand our horizon.Your career is a long term goal and when you decide to make a career move,it is important to make an overall assessment.

Forbes sat down with Dan Portillo, VP of Talent at Greylock to ask for his advice on how to assess one's next career move.Dan helped big companies like Facebook, Jive Software & Gilt Groupe to online success. Greylock manages over $2 billion dollars and they have investments in consumer internet companies and software companies.

Dan Portillo  worked on the executive team at Mozilla as the head of HR, Recruiting, and University Relations, growing the company from 20 to over 300 employees in 7 different countries.Prior to Greylock, he was Vp of Success & Engagement at Rypple.He created the deployment strategy for Social Performance Application, which was acquired by Salesforce.

Before you make that career move,think about your career in a long-term goal.Don't make a rash decision,takethe time to think and re-evaluate your next career move. Focus on investing in yourself and in your skills because it will be your biggest asset."If you make short-term trade-offs you're going to pay for it later." Dan said. 

Think about how long you want to be in that particular job.You should consider exploring your options and expanding your horizon.

According to Dan, these are three questions you need to ask yourself.Am I working for the right manager? Know what qualities you want in a leader and see if it describes your manager. 

Am I on the right team? Choose the right team because it will be difficult to be successful when you're on the wrong team.

Am I solving the right problem? Many companies waste time and money solving the wrong problem, so make sure you solve the right problem.

Assess the next company you want to work for.Choose the environment that is best for you .Dan explained that when you apply for large companies,you  usually have  to wait in line.On the other hand, when you apply for smaller companies,you help launch them into a new market.Some people thrive in small companies while others in large companies.Visit Jobs & Hire  for more helpful career tips.
