A ragtag team of mutants have established their dominance over a mutated monster over the extended Memorial Day weekend. "X-Men: Day of Future Past" debuted with $90 million overtaking Warner Bros.' "Godzilla" which raked in just a third of X-Men's debut earnings at $31 million on its second week.

Fox-Marvel's action flick is expected to earn close to $110 million before Memorial Day ends, potentially making it the fifth-highest Memorial Day weekend movie opener. The 2007 family adventure film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" currently holds the title as the highest-grossing Memorial Holiday flick with $140 million.

Within the franchise, "Days of Future Past" is the second-highest earning X-Men film to have opened over the Memorial Day weekend. Brett Ratner's "X-Men: The Last Stand", released in 2006 with $123 million, precedes the 2014 film.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" includes Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, and Peter Dinklage in lead roles with Jenniffer Lawrence of the Hunger Games fame, former Bond-girl Halle Berry, and Juno-star Ellen Page as the film's heroines.

The results were as impressive in international box office charts. X-Men opened at number 1 in over 119 countries, garnering debut earnings of $262 million.

Apparently, news of X-Men director's Bryan Singer's sexual assault lawsuit were not enough to keep X-Men fans from catching the film's debut. Singer has reportedly decided not to appear in any press conferences relating to the film for the meantime.
