Saul "Canelo" Alvarez expressed willingness to face Manny Pacquiao in a super fight, but the former junior middleweight champion reiterated that he will not go down from his normal 154-pound weight.
However, for the fight to happen, Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach said that Canelo should go down to 150, saying that 154lbs is too much for Pacquiao.
Alvarez previously went down to 152 pounds when he fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September last year, but Roach insisted that even that catch weight will not be good for the former pound-for-pound king.
"I think [the fight] is possible, but I think 152-pounds is too much for Manny. If he [Canelo] manages to [get down to] 150-pounds it would be much better. But first let's see what happen. We've had no offers [on that fight]," Roach said via BoxingScene.
Alvarez, who is scheduled to face Erislandy Lara on July 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, also recently said that all talks about a fight against Pacquiao are just plain rumors at this point, saying that he is focused on his upcoming fight next month.
"These are nothing more than rumors, rumors [which began] because Oscar spoke to Arum to make peace but never discussed this fight. The media began to speculate [about that fight] but it was never discussed. Right now we have Lara but [if that fight comes along, Pacquiao is] clearly one of the best and you have to fight the best," Alvarez said.
The Pacquiao vs Alvarez showdown looms as Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank are showing willingness to co-promote fights in the future, especially after Richard Schaefer stepped down as the GBP chief executive officer.
Alvarez, who developed close relationship with Schaefer over the past several years, made it clear that he will stay with Golden Boy Promotions, which means that the proposed super fight is still a possibility if both camp will reach an agreement for a catch weight.
"We're fine, we're fine with Golden Boy," Alvarez said. "We're doing things good and we keep working the same. I think for me it doesn't create any problems. Now between them, I don't know. But for me personally and my career, it's not affecting it and that's the most important thing. If it were to affect my career or something, then it would be different but we are working very well under Oscar's hand."
