Amir Khan and Devon Alexander will collide on December 13 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada for the World Boxing Council (WBC) silver welterweight title.
Alexander's trainer, Kevin Cunningham, said in an interview with BoxingScene that upcoming fight would be a treat to boxing fans because both fighters are looking to prove something, while also adding that the winner of the bout deserves a shot against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao next year.
"Alexander-Khan is a great match up," Cunningham said. "I think Khan has improved tremendously since hooking up with Virgil Hunter. I also think that the winner of this fight deserves a shot at Mayweather or Pacquiao."
Alexander, who holds a 26-2 record with 14 knockouts, lost to Shawn Porter in their International Boxing Federation (IBF) title fight in December last year, but he bounced back with a unanimous decision win against Jesus Soto Karass.
Cunningham strongly believes that Alexander deserves to headline a big fight in Las Vegas, while Khan is also climbing up the ladder again after winning in his last three fights following two straight devastating defeats.
Khan and Cunningham were supposed to collide in December last year, but the Briton opted to stay away from the fight as he was chasing a big-money showdown with Floyd Mayweather - a gamble that did not work out after the pound-for-pound king opted to face Marcos Maidana.
But with both fighters available, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya said that there will be no hindrance for the fight anymore, including the fight date, which will also be the same date for the showdown between Timothy Bradley and Diego Chaves.
"It couldn't be avoided [having the shows on the same night], so there will be different start times," De La Hoya said in an interview with Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports. "I've talked to HBO about it. I've talked to Top Rank president Todd duBoef about it. I've talked to Showtime. We have so many dates and so many fighters, this couldn't be avoided, but the good thing is, we're giving the fans a great show and that's the most important thing."
