Fans of the popular 90's manga "Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play or Curious Play" or simply "Fushigi Yugi" were recently thrilled by the sketches released by author Yuu Watase. As posted on Yuu's Twitter account last week, various modified and recent sketches of famous lead characters of the anime franchise-including Miaka, Tamahome, and Yui, were uploaded.
This brought nostalgia to those fans that avidly read the manga and watched the TV adaptation before. As reported by Geek, Fushigi Yugi supporters immediately thought of a sequel to the previously concluded 18-volume manga back in the 90s. However, despite everyone's excitement, no reboot of the hit anime has been released yet.
The story revolves around the characters of Miaka and her best friend Yui, who were drawn to the book "The Universe of Four Gods" upon reading it from the school library. Both were then regarded as the priestess of the Southern and the Eastern Kingdom of ancient China.
Inside the book, they met their respective warriors in charge of the priestess' safety. Miaka, however, did not only meet her first warrior Tamahome but also developed feelings for the latter.
Miaka was called the Suzaku of the Southern Kingdom while her best friend Yui was hailed as the priestess of the Eastern Kingdom, Seiryuu.
Since Miaka was first drawn in the book, Yui's character was left behind and read the story instead. However, as she reads from the real world, Yui experienced the same feeling as her best friend and eventually fell for Tamahome's character too. That created a conflict among the three characters eventually.
The manga was a well-adored piece released from 1992 to 1996. It was then adapted to an anime with 52 episodes from April 1995 to March 1996. It was also called a girls' manga as Fushigi Yugi dwelled on various topics such as friendship, love, and power.
But some critics say the manga is too mature for teenage girls who mostly purchased it. Even to this day, Fushigi Yugi's fandom is still strong. Fans are still excited for Miaka, Tamahome, andHotohori's love triangle. The rest of Miaka's celestial warriors were Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Mitsukake, and Chiriko.
