The production for the third season of “Outlander” is ongoing in Scotland. While fans are counting down the days until Droughtlander ends, series star Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire in the show, recently gave an update on where they are in terms of filming.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Balfe revealed that they have already shot eight episodes of "Outlander" and are almost halfway through with filming. The actress also said that she and Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie, have already shot one episode together and will be filming more scenes this week.
“So [this week] Jamie and Claire will be together from now on,” said Balfe. “So Sam and I will be on set together as we go forward.”
Does this mean that the actors have already shot the most anticipated scene of Season 3? The new installment is based on Diana Gabaldon’s third “Outlander” novel titled “Voyager,” and in the book, Claire and Jamie are reunited after spending 20 years apart. Claire returns to 18th century Scotland through the stones of Craigh Na Dun, and she goes to a print shop in Edinburgh owned by a certain Alexander Malcolm. Believing that Alexander is Jamie, she enters the print shop, and once Jamie sees her, the two have an emotional reunion right there on the shop’s floor.
Balfe also spoke with Variety and said that Heughan and her storylines are separate in the first few episodes of "Outlander" season 3 and that she has mostly been filming with Tobias Menzies (Frank) and Sophie Skelton (Brianna). This means that viewers will get to see more of Claire’s life during the late 1940s to the 1960s.
After Heughan and Balfe film their pivotal scene, it is expected that filming will take place on the high seas as part of season 3 will see the couple going on a voyage to the Caribbean. The actress said that they will be filming soon in South Africa, which will be standing in for Jamaica in the upcoming installment.
“We go there next year, so that will be interesting,” said Balfe.
“Outlander” returns to Starz in 2017.
