Roger Mayweather believes that his nephew, Floyd Mayweather Jr., has nothing to prove, but he wants to see the reigning pound-for-pound king settle the score with Manny Pacquiao.
In an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio, Roger Mayweather expressed hope that Pacquiao and Floyd Jr. will eventually decide to face each other.
The elder Mayweather said that Pacquiao is probably interested in facing the undefeated American only because of the huge money that will be at stake, and not because he is confident he can be the first fighter to defeat the Grand Rapids native.
"The only way he will fight Floyd for is what everybody will fight Floyd for, the fucking money. He ain't gonna fight him cause he believes he can win, I don't think so. But I hope he does fight Floyd, that's what the people wanted to see," Roger Mayweather.
The world-renowned trainer also added that both fighters should set aside their egos and give what the fight fans wants. He is unsure though how Pacquiao will fare against his nephew, pointing out that the only way to know it is by seeing the two boxing greats square off against each other.
"People only wanted to see that because they wanted to see what would Pacquiao do with Floyd if they ever fought, that's why a lot of people want to see the fight. Hopefully they will make the fight, then they will find out what he can do with Floyd," Roger Mayweather.
Floyd Mayweather previously said that he has no interest in facing Pacquiao at this point mainly because the Filipino boxing icon is still under Top Rank Promotions. The reigning WBC welterweight champion stressed that he has no plan to do business with Bob Arum again.
Pacquiao, though, could become a free agent at the end of the year, and Roger Mayweather is hoping that the development will lead to the Mayweather-Pacquiao super fight.
"I heard the fight was gonna happen before. Pacquiao has turned down so many fights with Floyd, it don't make no difference," Roger Mayweather said. "Now let's just see about all the talking that said it would be done. Then we'll see if the fight is gonna happen or not."
