Universal Monsters Reboot News: ‘The Mummy’ Casts Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe; To Include Dracula In Next Sequel?

On December 1, 2016, Universal Pictures released the trailer for the upcoming film reboot titled "The Mummy" which includes Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe as lead actors. This film paves the way for other monsters of the classical era such as Dracula, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde and the Wolf Man.

Following the traditions of Marvel and DC Comics, creators from Universal attempts an ambitious film franchise worthy of multiple blockbuster sequels. Only this time, they unearth characters that gave birth to history's earliest modern fantasy literature.

An article published by Geek reveals how Universal plans to drop these explosive films between the years 2018 and 2019. Other characters to grace this universe includes legendary vampire slayer Abraham Van Helsing, the creature from Black Lagoon and even the bride of Frankenstein's monster.

Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Tyler Colt, an ex-Navy SEAL operative serving as a mirrored contemporary counterpart of Brendan Frasier's Rick O'Connell in the previous decade's "The Mummy" film trilogy. Meanwhile, Russell Crowe will play the role of the bipolar Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde assisting in the destruction of Egypt's malevolent mummified queen played by Sofie Boutella.

Speaking of future sequels, a report by Express Co. UK reveals how Universal aims to revive (or more like redeem) Luke Evans from the flopped "Dracula: Untold" film. In an exclusive interview, Luke Evans describes Dracula, the Invisible Man, and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde as the franchise's answer to the "Avengers" trio comprised of Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man.

Apart from resurrecting classical fantasy and horror characters, Universal also branches out to other genres. An article from Jobs & Hire describes how the producers fund $4 billion worth of special effects for the American adaptation of the famous Japanese animated series "Voltron."
