The Big Four of men's tennis: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray provided the best matches of 2016. Before the curtain closes this year, we revisit their outstanding matches, be it in the ATP Tour or Grand Slam events.
To summarize men's tennis in 2016, Bleacherreport divided the calendar year into two seasons. The first half of the year belongs to Novak Djokovic while the second half to Andy Murray. Novak was very dominant until the French Open while Andy's resurgence came later on. Murray's domination has become catastrophic for Novak to give up the world number one title before the year ends.
1. Roger Federer vs. Marin Cilic in Wimbledon Quarterfinals
The Swiss Maestro only played 28 matches this year yet his match against Marin Cilic on grass is one of his best yet. According to ATP website, it is interesting to note that Federer was not on his best form in Wimbledon after his knee surgery last February. However, he was still able to close an unbelievable win over another grass counter-puncher Marin Cilic.
2. Andy Murray vs. Milos Raonic in the Australian Open Semifinals
It was a closed fight. However, when Milos had an injury and a thigh problem during the match, the tide has changed. It favored heavily the British number one. Murray was able to close the match after five sets ensuring his arrival to the finale.
3. Rafael Nadal vs. Alexander Sverev in the Fourth Round, Indian Wells
Alexander Sverev is only 18 at this time when he gave Rafael Nadal a run for the money. He is one of the next generation in tennis expected to reach the top ten standing, according to a report from Jobs & Hire. This is a clash between a veteran and a budding tennis superstar. Sverev has match point but a sloppy volley caught the net. Nadal strikes back and won the last 14 points closing the match at, 6-7(8), 6-0, 7-5.
4. Novak Djokovic vs. Stan Wawrinka.
Novak still has an impressive year. But his memorable matches are those when he lost. His loss to Stan Wawrinka in the US Open Final provided the best drama this year. Novak submitted to Wawrinka's huge strokes with 6-7(1), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in favor of the Swiss.
